چکیده

We present results of a numerical analysis of relaminarization processes in MHD duct and pipe flows. It is motivated by Julius Hartmann’s classical experiments on flows of mercury in pipes and ducts under the influence of magnetic fields. The simulations, conducted both in periodic and non-periodic settings, provide a first detailed view of flow structures that have not been experimentally accessible. The main novelty of the analysis is very long (tens to hundreds of hydraulic diameters) computational domains that allows to discover new flow regimes with localized turbulent spots near the side walls parallel to the magnetic field. The computed critical parameters for transition as well as the friction coefficients are in good agreement with Hartmann’s data.

Experimental Investigation of Friction Coefficient in Ribleted Pipes and the Effect of Fine Particles

The effect of fine particles on turbulence damping and reduction of flow friction coefficient in ribleted pipes, have been investigated experimentally. Tests have been conducted in a ribleted pipe with hydraulic diameter of 18.6 mm, and 20 stream wise riblets of 1.8 mm depth, along the pipe. Flows of water tap with Reynolds number from 5000 to 30000 were compared with flows containing silt-clay...

Evaluation of turbulence models in MHD channel and square duct flows

In this paper, several low and high Reynolds number versions of k-ε and Reynolds stress turbulence models have been evaluated in a channel and a square duct flow with and without a magnetic field by comparing the predictions with direct numerical simulations data. The simulations are performed using FLUENT solver. The additional source terms for magnetic field effects on turbulence have been in...

Development length of laminar magnetohydrodynamics pipe flows

In this article, a laminar magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) developing flow of an incompressible electrically conducting fluid subjected to an external magnetic field is considered. The aim of the study is to propose a correlation for computing the development length of the laminar MHD developing flow in a pipe. A numerical approach is considered to solve the problem. In the first step, the numerical...

On the Universality of the Velocity Profiles of a Turbulent Flow in an Axially Rotating Pipe

Abstract. If a fluid enters an axially rotating pipe, it receives a tangential component of velocity from the moving wall, and the flow pattern change according to the rotational speed. A flow relaminarization is set up by an increase in the rotational speed of the pipe. It will be shown that the tangentialand the axial velocity distribution adopt a quite universal shape in the case of fully de...

Study of instabilities in a quasi-2D MHD duct flow with an inflectional velocity profile

The mechanisms responsible for instabilities and a transition to turbulence in liquid metal duct flows of a fusion blanket are not understood very well, which limits predictive capabilities for heat and material transport in a blanket. In order to elucidate such mechanisms in quasi-two-dimensional (Q2D) magnetohydrodynamic flows with inflection points, an experimental and computational effort i...
